Review - Every Saturday Night by Alexa Land
This was cute, if a bit unbelievable. A young man, Logan, is surprised by his ex-girlfriend turning up on his doorstep. She presents him a baby, Owen, which she says is his, and scarpers before he can really argue. His beautifully diverse housemates take this all in their stride and within a few days, he is coping fabulously, as well as meeting a gorgeous bike mechanic and seeming to breeze through the whole, 'so I AM bisexual,' epiphany,
Lucky, isn't who he seems, although his secret is obvious fairly early on. There are some big fat clues which Logan doesn't pick up on, I assume because he's trying to bring up Owen and get his life back together.
The relationship they have is sweet. We don't see a lot of the results of him "winding up in bed with," Lucky each Saturday night, but we do see them slowly falling in love, with the encouragement of his housemates in the pink Victorian house where they all live. There are secrets, but to the author's credit, they don't result in the inevitable split up. That comes from another direction.
This is warm and fuzzy, a Hallmark movie of a book. The bad people are definitely of the "boo-hiss" variety, with no redeeming features whatsoever, but the realities of a long-term relationship are deftly handled.
There were a couple of other things that kind of took me out of the story. Throughout, Owen, Logan's baby boy, is referred to as 'the baby,' or 'my son,' and Lucky as 'my boyfriend,' the result of which the reader is kept at arm's length from the characters and the action. And people were either super-nice or super-horrible. It would have been good to see more depth to some of the characters, rather than make the villains cardboard cutouts.
I haven't read the other books in the series, but I'm guessing they will have the same sweet - dare I say saccharine? - flavour to them. An acquired taste, but everyone in the book is lovely so this is great if you have a sweet tooth. I prefer romance books with more bite (and I don't mean vampires.)

A As a young single dad, my life’s all about raising my sweet baby boy. But every Saturday night while my family babysits, I get to go out, cut loose, and act my age. Hey, we all need a break from time to time. And every Saturday night, I keep winding up in bed with a gorgeous, Cuban-American motorcycle mechanic named Lucky. The fact that I’m developing feelings for him is a problem, because this was only supposed to be a fling. He’s returning to Miami in a couple of months, and my life is here in San Francisco. Plus, I feel like there’s something he’s not telling me, so maybe I don’t even know the real Lucky. But I can’t help but wonder--is there any chance this could turn into something real? Or are those few hours we spend together one night a week the best I can hope for? Every Saturday Night is a low-angst, opposites attract gay romance and the sixth book in Alexa Land’s Firsts and Forever Stories. All the books in this collection can be read as stand-alones, or enjoyed in order.
